The livestock and poultry sector continues to play a major role in ensuring food security as it contributes 26-28% of the entire Agriculture output. It is a consistent growth factor for agriculture.

GOOD EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLAN (GEMP) WORKSHOP IN ROMBLON by: Dr. Sharie Aviso
The province of Romblon recorded its last outbreak in year 2003, which was an incursion caused by the entry of uncooked meat carried by passengers aboard a shipping vessel from North Harbor, Manila. The year 2006 was a busy one for the NFMDTF and partners in the DARFU-IV and Region IV LGUs. Here’s a glimpse of some of the activities undertaken to keep Region IV FMD-free.
Meetings with Hog Raisers Groups. The NFMDTF met with Hog Raisers Groups of Batangas (10 June), Laguna (20 June), Quezon (8 July), and Cavite (22 July) to discuss the animal movement policies of the BAI and to persuade the owners to apply their farms for accreditation as “FMD-free farms”.

Ang FMD Program sa Katimugang Tagalog na ipinatutupad ng Kagawaran ng Pagsasaka Blg. 4 (DA-RFU IV) ay naglalayong ipagpatuloy ang mga gawain at tuntunin ng pinasimulan ng NFMDTF. Benguet was the only province in the Cordillera that was left behind during the national declaration as FMD-free with vaccination in December 2005. Based on the record, most of the previous outbreaks were from Baguio City and nearby municipalities such as La Trinidad, Itogon and Tuba. On the trace-back investigation made by the technical personnel, it was found out that affected animals at the stockyard and slaughterhouse came from nearby regions. ROMBLON CONFISCATES HOT MEAT by: Dr. Sharie Aviso
The province of Romblon has confiscated hot meat not once, not twice, but three times for the year 2006 in Poctoy Port, Odiongan, Romblon. The carcasses confiscated were assorted beef and pork with no accompanying shipping permits and meat inspection certificates. All confiscated items were disposed of by saturation of disinfectants and then by burying.

Who can ever miss the most huggable mascot in town that graced almost all important events in the industry! Name it, you’ll always find Super Pig in the picture. The high-profile mascot even shook hands with the Agriculture Secretary during the Agrilink in 2004; went up to see the Australian Ambassador in Makati City; met a lot of government chief executives to promote FMD Eradication Campaign by tapping the consumers to buy only healthy meat that passed through ante- and post-mortem inspection by meat inspectors.
